Watch: How to refurbish a rusted pipe and protect it against future corrosion using Liquid Metal Epoxy Coating
Liquid Metal Epoxy Coating is brush applied to strengthen pipework and protect it against corrosion and chemical attack as part of the Sylmasta Pipe Refurbishment System.
Once painted onto a pipe, it sets to form a smooth, metallic, hard-wearing outer surface which acts as a barrier protecting the original substate from environmental damage.
Before application of Liquid Metal, the pipework being refurbished should undergo surface preparation. Paint, rust, grime and previous repair coatings are removed via abrasive blasting, sandpaper or with a power brush.
Liquid Metal is easy to mix and apply. Part B (hardener) is poured directly into the Part A (resin) container. It is then stirred using a spatula until streak-free and a consistent grey colour.
The epoxy coating is painted onto the pipe using a brush. Each coating should be around 0.5mm to 1mm thick. Its high intitial tack and adhesion enables it to adhere easily with pipework.
Liquid Metal has a gel time of 90 minutes and a re-coat time of between five and eight hours. Curing can be sped up by using a hot air gun evenly across the entire repair.
It is recommended to apply at least two coats of Liquid Metal for a pinhole-free coating. Each additional layer painted on increases the thickness of the outer shield. Once Liquid Metal fully cures, it provided a high gloss, corrosion resistant shield for the pipe.
Overwrapping Liquid Metal with SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage will further protect the pipe against corrosion and chemical attack. SylWrap HD is added whilst the final coating of Liquid Metal has gelled but remains tacky. The epoxy coating improves adhesion between the pipe and bandage.
SylWrap will cure within minutes to form a thickened, rock-hard, impact-resistant sleeve around the pipe for even greater protection levels.
Water and wastewater companies regularly use this repair method to refurbish severely weakend pipe bridges, where removal and replacement would otherwise by an expensive project lasting many weeks.
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water refurbished a dilapidated 20-metre long pipe bridge crossing the River Rhondda with 70kg of Liquid Metal and 15 SylWrap Bandages.
The repair materials cost under £5,000 and took three days to apply. In contrast, the total cost of replacement including permits, redirection of wastewater, removal, dispossal, fabrication of new pipe, transport and labour was estimated at over £250,000.
Sylmasta filmed the above video at their site in the UK using a heavily corroded carbon steel industrial barrel. The barrel was 450mm and selected for the demonstration to show how easy it is to apply Liquid Metal to large diameter pipes.
