SylPad is used to increase the resistance achieved by Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape during the repair of high pressure live leaks on larger diameter pipes.

It is placed on top of the hole during the application of Wrap & Seal. Once fixed in place by the Tape, SylPad better concentrates the pressure of Wrap & Seal directly over the leak, making the Tape more effective.

Wrap & Seal is made from self-amalgamating silicone and stretches by 300 percent. As it is wrapped around a pipe, it fuses to form a solid rubber band which seals live leaks.

To use SylPad and Wrap & Seal, first draw a line on the pipe with a pen to mark the repair area. Wrap & Seal is anchored around 50mm to the side of the leak. It is then wrapped towards the hole with a 50 percent overlay.

Once the leak is reached, the Tape is wrapped directly over it. After two layers of Wrap & Seal have been built, SylPad is pushed onto the Tape directly covering the location of the hole.

SylPad will adhere to the Wrap & Seal. The Tape is then wrapped on top of the SylPad, securing it in place. Application of Wrap & Seal continues directly over the leak to build up a ridge.

If there is still water seeping from the pipe after one Wrap & Seal has been used, additional Tapes are applied until the leak has been completely sealed. Multiple Wrap & Seals will fuse together, with pressure resistance up to 30 bar possible.

The above video was filmed on a test rig at Sylmasta HQ in the United Kingdom. A 7.2mm hole was cut into a 450mm steel pipe operating at 3 bar pressure.

One large Wrap & Seal Tape (PB-50x4m) combined with SylPad successfully sealed the leak at the initial pressure. A second tape was added, which increased the resistance of the repair to 6 bar. A third tape then achieved 9 bar pressure resistance.
