CrackSeal Pipe Sealant is used to seal cracks and splits in cast iron drain, waste and sewer pipes

CrackSeal Cast Iron Pipe Sealant

CrackSeal Sealant is moisture-curing pipe sealant which instantly seals cracks and splits in cast iron waste, drain and soil pipes. It is also effective repairing longitudinal splits in steel and concrete lined pipework.

It extrudes from its cartridge using a standard sealant gun directly into the crack or split requiring repair. CrackSeal will harden almost instantly to fill the leak, forming a skin in approximately 10 minutes depending on ambient temperature.

CrackSeal adheres to wet surfaces and even seals when water is leaking through a pipe at low-pressure. It is temperature resistant to 150°C and withstands pressure up to 10 bar after reaching maximum properties.

It is black-coloured to appear almost uniform with cast iron. CrackSeal is silicone free, low odour and can be painted over.

Unlike some other sealants, CrackSeal contains no diisocyanates. It is therefore not covered by the 2023 EU and UK REACH legislation governing the safe use of diisocyanates and requires no mandatory safety training before use.

About

How to fix a cracked cast iron pipe using CrackSeal Sealant

The pipework undergoing repair should be clean and free from oil and grease before application. Although CrackSeal adheres to wet surfaces, the pipe should be as dry as possible.

CrackSeal comes in a 310ml cartridge. The user pierces the metal seal on the tip of and screws on the nozzle. The nozzle is then cut to the desired size at a 45° angle.

A standard sealant gun applies CrackSeal. The cartridge is inserted and the base pushed out. The user then extrudes CrackSeal directly into the crack until it is full.

If necessary, CrackSeal can be smoothed with a spatula or similar tool dipped in water which contains a little detergent.

A 310ml CrackSeal cartridge will fill approximately one metre of cracked pipework based on a 1cm wide crack (One cartridge per yard if the crack is 1/2″).

CrackSeal will set instantly, forming a skin after approximately 10 minutes. Any unused CrackSeal will retain its properties inside the cartridge for 12 months.

Reinforcement with SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage

Sylmasta recommend reinforcing repairs made with CrackSeal by overwrapping the sealant with a SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage.

SylWrap HD is a water-activated composite wrap. It sets rock-hard in minutes to form an impact resistant layer of protection covering CrackSeal for a permanent repair.

CrackSeal and SylWrap HD can be purchased together in the SylWrap Cast Iron Pipe Repair Kit or the Drain & Waste Pipe Repair Kit.

The Cast Iron Kit also contains Superfast Steel Epoxy Putty for making a single pipe repair. The Drain & Waste Kit is more specialised and enables multiple repairs including live leaks to cast iron and plastic drain, waste and soil pipes.

As well as CrackSeal, Superfast Steel and SylWrap HD, it contains Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst for online leak sealing and SplitFill Epoxy Adhesive for splits and gaps in plastic pipework.

CrackSeal Sealant and SylWrap HD seal 450mm split in cast iron pipe

This demonstration video filmed at Sylmasta HQ shows CrackSeal repairing a 450mm long split cut into a cast iron test pipe.

Sylmasta Non-Flammable Degreaser cleans the pipe with CrackSeal then extruded directly into the split. The repair finishes with SylWrap HD adding reinforcement.

A bucket of water is then poured into the pipe. Nothing leaks through, showcasing the strength of the repair.

Cast iron pipe repair with water leaking through resistant to 10 bar

Product testing at Sylmasta HQ assesses the live leak repair capability and pressure resistance of CrackSeal.

The sealant extrudes into a horizontal split in a cast iron test piece whilst a steady stream of water is leaking through.

CrackSeal achieves maximum properties in 24 hours, after which the repair is pressure tested. It withstands up to 10 bar. SylWrap HD then gives the pipe added strength.
