CrackSeal Cast Iron Pipe Sealant
CrackSeal Sealant is moisture-curing pipe sealant which seals cracks and splits in cast iron waste, drain and soil pipes where water is not leaking through. It can also be used on other materials where pressure is off, including steel and concrete lined pipework.
It comes in a 310ml cartridge and is extruded using a standard sealant gun. CrackSeal is applied directly into the crack or split in the pipe until it is totally filled. It will harden almost instantly to seal the leak, forming a skin in approximately 10 minutes depending on ambient temperature.
CrackSeal will adhere to wet surfaces and is black-coloured, making it appear almost uniform with cast iron. It contains no diisocyanates, is silicone free, low odour and can be painted over.
To reinforce repairs made with CrackSeal, Sylmasta recommend overwrapping with a SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage. The Bandage offers a rock hard, impact resistant layer of protection.
SylWrap can be purchased alongside CrackSeal as part of the SylWrap Cast Iron Pipe Repair Kit. The Kit also contains Superfast Steel Epoxy Putty and enables permanent repairs to be made to holes, cracks and splits in under 30 minutes.
How to fix a cracked cast iron pipe using CrackSeal Sealant
Before application of CrackSeal Sealant, the pipework being repaired needs to be clean and free from oil and grease. Although CrackSeal adheres to wet surfaces, the pipe should be as dry as possible.
To apply CrackSeal, the user pierces the metal seal on the tip of the cartridge and screws on the nozzle. The nozzle is then cut to a the desired size at a 45° angle.
The CrackSeal cartridge is inserted into a standard sealant applicator gun and the metal seal at the base of the cartridge is pushed out.
Sufficient CrackSeal is then extruded into the crack until it is totally filled. If necessary, CrackSeal can be smoothed with a spatula or similar tool dipped in water which contains a little detergent.
A 310ml CrackSeal cartridge will fill approximately one metre of cracked pipework based on a 1cm wide crack (One cartridge per yard if the crack is 1/2″).
CrackSeal will set instantly, forming a skin after approximately 10 minutes. Any unused Sealant will retain its properties inside the cartridge for 12 months.
