SylShield Abrasion Resistant Pipe Wrap –
For Weld & Joint Protection
SylShield is a composite wrap with extreme thickness which provides ultimate abrasion protection for pipelines and pipe weld joints subject to intense processes.
It is three times thicker than standard SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage, offering a much more robust protective outer shell capable of withstanding the rigours of trenchless pipe installation methods like horizontal directional drilling, auger boring, impact moling and microtunnelling.
Using SylShield to protect pipes and welds from damage and scarring prior to these trenchless installation processes avoids the need for making pipeline repairs after pull back.
In harsh environments such as mines, quarries and onshore and offshore pipelines, SylShield provides better protection than other composite wraps against abrasion, corrosion and chemical attack because of the thickness of the fibreglass.
The extra thickness also allows the user to build significant layers of protection more quickly with less wrapping. The fast working resin in SylShield sets within minutes.
SylShield is temperature resistant to 250°C. It protects pipework made of steel, stainless steel, copper, malleable iron, GRP, ceramic, most plastics, clay, concrete, rubber and lead.
How to protect a pipe weld or pipeline using SylShield Abrasion Resistant Overwrap
SylShield is easy to use for pipe weld protection. The user can wrap it directly onto pipes, welds and joints or over other protective measures already added such as anti-corrosion coatings, brushable epoxies, shrink sleeves and composites.
Dipping the bandage into water activates the resin. The user then wraps SylShield tightly around the pipework requiring protection. Futher water smooths down SylShield as the application continues, ensuring the bandage conforms tightly to the pipe.
Whilst the bandage cures, applying a compression film over SylShield can improve lamination to the pipe. If using compression film, the user should perforate it after application to allow SylShield to degas during curing.
SylShield has a work time of 2-5 minutes. It achieves a functional cure in 30-45 minutes and a full cure with maximum properties in 24 hours.
To determine the quantity of SylShield and the bandage sizes for a specific application, please go to the Repair Calculator Tab and enter your data.
Sylmasta make all their own composite pipe repair and protection bandages at their world-leading production facility in the United Kingdom.
This guarantees fresh product, a reliable supply chain and reduced lead times. It also means Sylmasta can produce customised wraps based on client needs.
Sylmasta have previously manufactured different coloured bandages to better disguise repairs, slower-setting resin for use in hot climates and wraps incorporated with fire retardant inhibitors to meet safety regulations for use on the UK rail network.

Using SylShield to protect pipelines and welds against abrasion, wear and impact
This video shows how the extra thickness of SylShield builds more robust protection for pipelines against abrasion, wear and impact.
SylShield is wrapped along a section of test pipe with the recommended 50 percent overlap. Stretch film contains the resin within SylShield as the bandage cures
After removing the stretch film, the pipe is left with a rock-hard shell capable of withstanding trenchless pipe installation processes.
SylShield Abrasion Resistant Pipe Wrap Repair Calculator
The below Wrapping Calculator (SylWrap / SylShield coverage) can help determine the optimum SylShield repair when protecting a pipeline.
Enter the diameter of the pipe in millimetres, the length of the area requiring wrapping and the operating pressure of the pipeline. The safety factor is a multiple to include a margin of safety. For example, if pipe pressure is 5 bar and you want a safety factor of two, the calculator will formulate a repair capable of withstanding 10 bar.
Once data is entered, the calculator will show the number of layers recommended for the application, how many SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandages are required and the estimated repair thickness in millimetres.
To see the repair requirements for SylShield, select Change Wrap Size. This will display a dropdown list of all bandages. The calculator can then determine the number of that specific SylShield Bandage needed based on the repair data entered.
It is also possible to calculate the number of SylShield based on how many layers are desired. The Change Layers option enables the user to input the number of layers they wish to wrap. One SylShield Bandage is approximately 1.2mm thick.
Calculations serve only as an initial guide and judgement should be made on the exact repair based upon all conditions.
