SylShield Pipe Weld & Protection Wrap

SylShield is a water-activated composite wrap with extreme thickness which is used for the protection of pipelines and weld joints subjected to intense processes such as trenchless pipe installation.

It is three times as thick as a standard SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage, offering a much more robust protective outer shell capable of withstanding the rigours of horizontal directional drilling, auger boring, impact moling and microtunnelling.

Using SylShield to protect pipes and welds from damage and scarring prior to trenchless installation avoids the need for making pipeline repairs after pull back.

In harsh environments such as mines, quarries and onshore and offshore pipelines, SylShield provides better protection than other composite wraps against abrasion, corrosion and chemical attack because of the thickness of the fibreglass.

This extra thickness also allows layers of protection to be built up more quickly with less wrapping required. SylShield is effective on pipes of all sizes made of steel, stainless steel, copper, malleable iron, GRP, ceramic, most plastics, clay, concrete, rubber, and lead.

The fast-working resin in SylShield allows application to take place in under 10 minutes. Unlike other moisture cured pipe weld and protection wraps, SylShield contains less than 0.1% free diisocyanate.

This means it is not covered by the 2023 EU and UK REACH legislation governing the safe use of diisocyanates and requires no mandatory safety training before use. At the same time, the low hazard formulation offers reduced risk to operators.

How to protect a pipe weld or pipeline using SylShield

SylShield is easy to use. It can be applied directly to the outer surface of pipes, welds and joints. It can also be wrapped over other protective measures such as anti-corrosion coatings, brushable epoxies, shrink sleeves and composites to enhance protection.

The resin in the composite wrap is activated using water. SylShield is then wrapped and smoothed around the pipe weld or pipeline. Further water is used to smooth the wrap down as the application continues.

A compression film can be applied over SylShield whilst it cures to improve lamination to the pipe. If a compression film is used, it should be perforated after application to allow SylShield to degas curing.

SylShield has a work time of 2-5 minutes. Repairs can be completed in under 30 minutes and a functional cure is achieved in 45 minutes. SylShield reaches maximum properties in 24 hours.
