SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage

SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage is a water-activated composite wrap made with high density fibres which strengthens and protects pipework, extending the lifespan of systems.

Applying SylWrap HD increases pipe pressure resistance, chemical resistance and hoop strength by creating a thick, rock-hard outer shell around pipework.

In successful qualification testing to pass ASME PCC-2 Appendix 401-III – Short Term Spool Survival, a pipe weakened by 86 percent from its original specification was strengthened by SylWrap HD and Industrial Metal Epoxy Paste to withstand over 309.6 bar pressure.

This SylWrap shell also reinforces leak and damage repairs made using epoxy putties, pastes, coatings or tapes by forming an impact resistant layer over the initial sealant.

The fast working resin in SylWrap HD sets within minutes. As a result, it can quickly reinforce large surface areas of degraded pipes from the outside without needing tools or systems shutting down. It can also be directly wrapped underwater.

SylWrap HD is temperature resistant to 250°C. It reinforces pipework made of steel, stainless steel, copper, malleable iron, GRP, ceramic, most plastics, clay, concrete, rubber and lead.

Water utilities companies in the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Mexico and Canada use SylWrap HD to reinforce leak repairs made on the public supply network. It has WRAS Approval, meaning it is certified to British standards as safe to use on pipes carrying drinking water.

How to strengthen and protect pipework with SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage

SylWrap HD is easy to use. Dipping the bandage into water activates the resin. The user then wraps it tightly around the pipework which requires strengthening or protection.

Further water smooths SylWrap HD down as the application continues, ensuring the bandage conforms tightly to the pipe.

SylWrap HD has a work time of 2-5 minutes. It achieves a functional cure in 30-45 minutes and a full cure with maximum properties in 24 hours.

SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage Repair Calculator

The below Wrapping Calculator (SylWrap / SylShield coverage) can help determine the optimum SylWrap HD repair when reinforcing or strengthening a pipeline.

Enter the diameter of the pipe in millimetres, the length of the area requiring wrapping and the operating pressure of the pipeline. The safety factor is a multiple to include a margin of safety. For example, if pipe pressure is 5 bar and you want a safety factor of two, the calculator will formulate a repair capable of withstanding 10 bar.

Once data is entered, the calculator will show the number of layers recommended for the application, how many SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandages are required and the estimated repair thickness in millimetres.

To see the repair requirements for a specific SylWrap HD Bandage size, select Change SylWrap Size. This will display a dropdown list of all bandages. The calculator can then determine the number of that specific SylWrap HD Bandage needed based on the repair data entered.

It is also possible to calculate the number of SylWrap HD based on how many layers are desired. The Change Layers option enables the user to input the number of layers they wish to wrap. One SylWrap HD Bandage is approximately 0.45mm thick.

This demonstration video shows how quick and easy SylWrap HD is to apply when strengthening a pipeline.

Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape had already sealed a pinhole leak in a steel test pipe.

SylWrap HD was activated with water before being wrapped and smoothed over the tape. It set rock-hard within minutes to provide an impact resistant protective sleeve around the pipe.

Permanent pipe repair demonstration to UK water company using Wrap & Seal and SylWrap HD

Sylmasta visit a UK water company to demonstrate the ease and speed of a permanent live leak repair using the products in a SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit.

Wrap & Seal contained a 6 bar leak in a steel test pipe before overwrapping with SylWrap HD.

Completing the permanent repair took under 30 minutes. The water company approved SylWrap Kits for use on their network shortly after.

Pinhole leak in elbow bend repair at Malaysia Water Pumping Station

A water pumping station in Malaysia use a Universal Pipe Repair Kit to seal a live leak on a 150mm steel pipe elbow bend.

Corrosion had caused a pinhole to appear on a section of pipe where it was impossible to fit a clamp. Shutting off the pipe was not possible because it would cause disruption to local water supplies.

Wrap & Seal sealed the leak whilst the pipe continued to operate at 6 bar pressure, followed by overwrapping with SylWrap HD.

CrackSeal Sealant was extruded directly into the crack and smoothed off using a spatula before it fully hardened. SylWrap HD was then wrapped down the length of the pipe to reinforce the repair.

When a bucket of water was poured into the pipe after the application, nothing leaked through – showcasing the strength of the repair.

Leaking step joint repair at Bahrain International Airport

The maintenance team at Bahrain International Airport make a live leak repair to a 100mm UPVC pipe leaking through a step joint.

Wrap & Seal built a repair up and over the step, preventing water seeping out. SylWrap HD then reinforced the repair.
