Industrial Metal Epoxy Repair Paste seals large holes and cracks on pipework and helps to repair areas of damage caused by corrosion and pitting

Industrial Metal Epoxy Repair Paste

Industrial Metal is an epoxy repair paste which rebuilds and reprofiles large areas of pipework by changing the shape and thickness of the external pipe surface.

Applying Industrial Metal to pipework left degraded by corrosion, chemical attack or other environmental factors increases the outer wall thickness to restore strength and return the line back to original specification.

In testing to pass ASME PCC-2 Appendix 401-III – Short Term Spool Survival, Industrial Metal and SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage rebuilt a pipe weakened by 86 percent to withstand over 309.6 bar pressure. In addition, Industrial Metal meets BS 6920 standard for use with potable water.

It also fills damage caused by pitting and impact, creating a smooth pipe surface. It removes step from joints and changes difficult angles. These processes improve the pipe for wrapping, as well as providing full contact and load spreading between the pipe and composite wrap.

Industrial Metal is effective on steel, iron, copper, PVC plastic and GRP. It is reinforced with corrosion resistant platelets, giving it an ultra smooth finish and high chemical resistance. This makes it ideal for use in aggressive environments. It also cures on wet surfaces and underwater.

How to reinforce pipework using Industrial Metal Epoxy Paste

Industrial Metal is a two-part epoxy paste which the user mixes and applies using a filling knife or other similar hand tool.

The pipework undergoing repair should be clean and free of paint, rust and grime. Roughening up the pipe either through grit blasting or grinding with a coarse wheel or abrasive disk pad improves adhesion.

Industrial Metal is applied immediately after preparation. The user mixes Part A and Part B at a 2:1 ratio on a clean, flat surface. The two contrasting colours blend into a uniform grey to indicate successful mixing.

The user then spreads the epoxy paste over the area requiring reprofiling using the filling knife, pushing Industrial Metal firming into the pipework to ensure maximum surface contact and avoid trapping air.

Full instructions for surface preparation and how to apply Industrial Metal come with the product and are available on the TDS.

Industrial Metal has a work time of 60 minutes. When building multiple layers, it has a re-coat time of between one and two hours. It achieves a full cure with maximum properties in 24 hours.

Once cured, Industrial Metal can be tapped, drilled, screwed, sawed, machined, ground, filed or painted to create a seamless finish uniform with the pipe undergoing repair.

It has an extremely light consistency, making it easier to mix than stiffer epoxy pastes. It is virtually odourless with no unpleasant smell and it is also thixotropic so will not sag.

To determine the quantity of Industrial Metal needed to cover a specified area of pipework, please go to the Repair Calculator Tab and enter your repair data.

The maximum temperature resistance of Industrial Metal is 130°C when post-cured. Instructions for post-curing are on the TDS. For reprofiling high temperature pipework requiring resistance to 250°C, please see Titanium Supergrade HT Epoxy Paste.

Reinforcement with SylWrap Composite Bandage

Sylmasta recommend reinforcing pipe repairs made with Industrial Metal by overwrapping the epoxy paste whilst it remains tacky with a SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage.

SylWrap HD is a water-activated composite wrap. It sets rock-hard in minutes to form an impact resistant layer of protection covering Industrial Metal, strengthening the repair by further increasing the outer thickness of the pipe.

Industrial Metal Epoxy Paste Applications

  • Rebuilding areas of pipework weakened by corrosion, chemical attack and other environmental factors to bring them back to original specification
  • Strengthening and reinforcing pipelines in petrochemical plants and other harsh environments
  • Filling in and smoothing out large areas of surface damage caused by pitting and impact damage
  • Reprofiling pipes by removing step from joints and other difficult shapes
  • Relining worn areas in pumps and valves

Benefits of Industrial Metal Epoxy Paste

  • Easy to use – mix the amount of paste required and apply using a hand tool
  • 60 minute work time enables more careful application without rushing from fear the paste will cure off prematurely
  • Effective underwater and on damp surfaces
  • Tested to BS 6920 standard for use with pipes and fittings carrying drinking water
  • Passed ASME PCC-2 Appendix 401-III – Short Term Spool Survival standard when used alongside SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage to rebuild a pipe weakened by 86 percent to withstand over 309.6 bar pressure

Industrial Metal Epoxy Paste Repair Calculator

The quantity of Industrial Metal needed to cover a specified area of pipework can be determined using the Pipe Repair Calculator (SylWrap Pipe Refurbishment System).

Enter the diameter of the pipe in millimetres, the length of the damaged area and the operating pressure of the pipeline. The safety factor is a multiple to include a margin of safety. For example, if pipe pressure is 5 bar and you want a safety factor of two, the calculator will formulate a repair capable of withstanding 10 bar.

Then go to Stage 2 – Repair Surface Damage. Select the percentage of the damaged area needing to be covered with Industrial Metal. The average depth in millimetres refers to the desired thickness of Industrial Metal.

Once data is entered, the calculator will suggest the amount of Industrial Metal required in kilograms. Calculations serve only as an initial guide and judgement should be made on the exact repair based upon all conditions.

The Pipe Repair Calculator (ASME PCC-2 Compliant) is a more thorough calculator which helps determine the products and quantities needed to make an ASME PCC-2 standard composite pipe repair. Calculations can be made for leaks, reprofiling, protective coating and SylWrap composite wrapping by entering the data and design of a specific repair.

Also available on the Calculator is a Quality Control Form (ASME PCC-2 Compliant). Filling in the form helps ensure all critical hold points are identified and the installation process is properly followed.
