Superfast Steel Epoxy Putty Stick

Superfast Steel is a fast-working epoxy putty in a 114g stick used to seal holes and leaking joints in offline metal pipework, reprofile pipes and rebuild small areas of damage left weakened by exterior attack.

It is steel-filled and specially formulated for the repair of steel, stainless steel, iron and other ferrous metal pipes where water pressure can be turned off. It is suitable for both domestic and industrial repairs, temperature resistant to 150°C and pressure resistant to 30 bar

Superfast Steel seals holes and cracks. It rebuilds small areas of damage left weakened by exterior attack, restoring outer pipe thickness to original specification. Superfast Steel also reprofiles pipes by filling pitting and smoothing out difficult shapes, like edges and steps.

It has WRAS approval, meaning it is certified to British standards as safe to use on pipes carrying drinking water. Pipework can go back into full service within one hour of repair using Superfast Steel.

Superfast Steel is resistant to water, chemicals and does not rust. It contains no solvents or VOC’s, is non-flammable and releases no noxious fumes. It will not shrink or pull away. Any unused putty stays fresh for future use when saved in its original packaging.

Cured Superfast Steel can be tapped, drilled, screwed, sawed, machined, ground, filed or painted to create a seamless finish uniform with the pipe undergoing repair.

Unlike most other suppliers of pipe repair products, Sylmasta make all their own epoxy putty sticks using the latest manufacturing technology at their production plant in the United Kingdom. This guarantees fresh product, a reliable supply chain and reduced lead times.

About

How to repair a leaking metal pipe with Superfast Steel Epoxy Putty Stick

Superfast Steel Stick comes pre-measured with the correct 1:1 ratio of resin to hardener. The user simply cuts the required amount of putty from the stick and kneads by hand.

The two contrasting colours blend into a uniform grey to indicate successful mixing. Whilst Superfast Steel Epoxy Putty is still soft, the user then pushes it into the crack or hole in the metal pipework.

Superfast Steel has a work life of approximately 3 minutes. It hardens within 5-10 minutes to form a solid, watertight material sealing the hole. It achieves working strength in one hour and a full cure with maximum properties in 24 hours.

When pipe reprofiling or rebuilding damage by increasing the outer wall thickness of weakened sections, the user presses Superfast Steel firmly onto the area requiring improvement. It cures to create a flat, smooth surface.

Reinforcement with SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage

Sylmasta recommend reinforcing metal pipe repairs made with Superfast Steel by overwrapping the epoxy putty with a SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage.

SylWrap HD is a water-activated composite wrap. It sets rock-hard in minutes to form an impact resistant layer of protection covering Superfast Steel for a permanent repair.

Superfast Steel and SylWrap HD can be purchased together in the SylWrap Standard Pipe Repair Kit or the Pipe Repair Contractor Case.

The Standard Kit makes a single offline pipe repair whilst the Contractor Case contains enough epoxy putty, bandages and Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape to repair up to six live leaks.

Slower setting and high temperature epoxy putty for metal repair

For complex pipe repair applications requiring longer than 5 minutes to mix and apply epoxy putty, please see Sylmasta AB Original Epoxy Putty.

AB Original comes with a two-hour work time. The extended cure means the user does not need to rush mixing or application through worry about the putty curing off too quickly.

For higher temperature repairs in excess of the 150°C resistance of Superfast Steel, please see Superfast Titanium Epoxy Putty Stick. Superfast Titanium offers resistance to up to 280°C.

Superfast Steel Epoxy Putty seals leaking corroded pipe end

Demonstration video filmed at Sylmasta HQ showing Superfast Steel sealing a corroded pipe end leaking through a joint.

Filing the surface of the pipe improved adhesion. Superfast Steel was then kneaded by hand and formed into a ‘sausage shape’.

The ‘sausage’ was pushed firmly all around the leaking pipe end. Within five minutes, it cured to form a rock-hard material permanently bonded to the pipe, sealing the leak.

Threaded pipe joint repair resistant to 10 bar using Superfast Steel and Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape

Instructional video showing a repair method formulated for a client to seal a threaded pipe joint in a system with maximum operating pressure of 10 bar whilst water leaked through.

Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape removes step from the joint and exerts elastic force to push Superfast Steel deep into the thread.

Using tape and epoxy putty together provides a belts-and-braces approach, cutting off all leak paths for a high pressure repair.

How to mix and apply an epoxy putty stick for quick and easy pipe repair

This general instructional video shows the best method to thoroughly mix and apply an epoxy putty stick.

The required amount of putty is cut from the stick. It is kneaded by constantly rolling and folding between the palms of the hands for at least four minutes.

Once the putty has turned a streak free and a uniform colour, it is ready to be applied to the pipe.
