Live leak repair of a 300mm steel pipe operating at 6 bar pressure at a water treatment plant in Malaysia

Malaysia Water Company 6 Bar Live Leak Repair 300mm Steel Pipe at Treatment Plant

A water company in Malaysia make their first repair with a SylWrap Contractor Case just one week after Sylmasta presented and demonstrated to industry stakeholders on a tour of the country, sealing a 6 bar live leak on a 300mm steel pipe at a treatment plant.

Case Study Overview

Site Water treatment plant
Location Malaysia
Pipe Type 300mm steel water pipe
Repair Type Live leak repair
Products Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape, SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage

Pipe Defect

The 300mm steel pipe had been leaking for two weeks through a 4mm hole. It could not be shutdown because of importance to operations at the plant, leaving a steady jet of water spraying out at 6 bar pressure and saturating the surrounding floor.

Such a leak would normally be sealed by the water company using a pipe repair clamp. The hole though was located on a saddle joint welded onto the pipe, sitting approximately 15mm above the original line. A clamp would therefore be ineffective.

SylWrap Solution

Sylmasta had presented and demonstrated to water industry stakeholders one week earlier on a visit to Malaysia, including the water company. They subsequently took a supply of SylWrap Pipe Repair Contractor Cases for their maintenance teams.

One of the maintenance teams trained by Sylmasta as part of the demonstration were sent to the treatment plant with a SYL-PRO-866 Contractor Case and asked to attempt a live leak repair.

After two weeks of continuous leakage, significant amounts of water had already been lost because of the perceived difficulty in repairing the pipe.

The maintenance team sealed the leak with Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape. Three 50mm x 11m Wrap & Seals were applied over the hole in a ridge until no water was seeping through.

This indicated the tapes had successfully amalgamated together and built enough pressure resistance to withstand the 6 bar pressure the line operated at.

A SYL866HD SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage was then used to reinforce and protect the Wrap & Seal. It was wrapped directly over the repair area, curing within minutes to provide a rock-hard, impact resistant outer shell.

Outcome

Completing the repair took under one hour. The pipe remained fully operational whilst the application took place and there was no disruption to the water treatment plant.

All the products in the Contractor Case have WRAS approval, meaning they are certified to British standards as safe to use with drinking water.

Follow Up

After seeing how quick and easy it was for their maintenance team to make a live leak repair, the water company is already planning to expand the use of Contractor Cases – including onto their public supply network.
