Superfast Copper Epoxy Putty being used to fix a leaking pipe under no pressure as part of a SylWrap Standard Pipe Repair Kit application

Watch: How to make a no pressure permanent pipe repair using a SylWrap Standard Pipe Repair Kit

A SylWrap Standard Pipe Repair Kit enables the user to fix bursts and leaks in under 30 minutes when there is no pressure to an offline pipe using a two-stage, permanent repair process.

The hole or crack in the pipe is sealed using Superfast Epoxy Putty. Superfast is a fast-working epoxy putty supplied in a pre-measured stick format, combining the resin and the hardener.

To use Superfast Epoxy Putty, the required amount is cut from the stick. Wearing gloves, the Putty is then kneaded by hand until it turns a uniform colour. This takes around three minutes.

Once successfully mixed, the Putty is pushed into the hole. Overlapping the sides creates a complete seal. The Putty should not be pushed too deep into the pipe to prevent blocking.

The Putty can be smoothed with a little water and the edges feathered. Within 5 to 10 minutes, it will have completely hardened, filling the crack in the pipe.

Stage two of the process follows, where a SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage is used to reinforce the initial repair. SylWrap is a composite repair wrap with a water activated resin.

Wearing gloves, the Bandage is removed from the pouch. It is dipped in water for around five seconds before being wrapped around the pipe with a 50 percent overlap.

As it is applied, SylWrap is smoothed down in the same direction as it is being wrapped to maintain tightness. Within a few minutes, it will begin to harden into a rock-hard impact resistant layer of protection encompassing the pipe. Once the Bandage has set, the repair is completed.

Superfast Epoxy Putty and SylWrap both have WRAS approval, meaning they are certified as safe to British Standards for use with drinking water.

Repairs can be made to pipes of most substrates and diameters, are temperature resistant to 120ºC, pressure resistant to 30 bar and effective on pipes carrying hot and cold water and chemicals.

A SylWrap Standard Pipe Repair Kit contains enough Superfast Epoxy Putty and one Bandage for making a single no pressure repair.

For a repair where pressure cannot be turned off, Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape should be used to seal the leak instead of putty. Wrap & Seal can be purchased separately, or as a part of the SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit for sealing live leaks.

For regular pipe repair users, Sylmasta have developed the SylWrap Contractor Case. Each Case comes with enough Wrap & Seal, Superfast Epoxy Putty and SylWrap Bandages to make up to six live leak repairs.

The Case can be easily stored on-site or on the van, equipping contractors with all the products they need to make an emergency pipe repair as soon as problems are identified.

Several of the United Kingdom’s water companies equip their engineers with Contractor Cases for the speed and ease with which they repair live leaks once detected on the public supply network.

Industries away from water where the Case is used include tradesmen in the event of accidentally breaching a pipe, facilities management companies, ships and oil rigs.

The above video was filmed during testing at Sylmasta HQ in the United Kingdom. A 3mm pinhole was drilled into a 100mm stainless steel pipe, before a Sylmasta technician showed how quick and easy it can be to fix a leaking pipe.
