Live leak pipe repair made to a 150mm steel pipe using no wraps or repair clamp

Watch: How to make an online pipe repair using no clamp or wrapping

When an online leak cannot be sealed by wrapping or fitting a pipe repair clamp, a no wrap live leak repair can instead be made by bonding a threaded pipe fitting over the leak using Superfast Aqua PW Epoxy Putty.

Superfast Aqua PW offers excellent wet surface and underwater adhesion, enabling it to bond to a pipe even when water is escaping and saturating the exterior.

The putty is mixed for around five minutes. Whilst soft, it is used to bond the fitting to the pipe. This channels the leak path directly through the fitting.

Enough Superfast Aqua PW should be used until the user is satisfied there is an extremely tight seal between the fitting and the pipe. It should then be left for at least eight hours to achieve working strength. Cure time can be accelerated by the use of heat.

After Superfast Aqua PW has hardened, an end cap or valve is screwed onto the fitting to contain the leak. In some instances, the screwing of the cap will result in pinhole leaks appearing around the valve where weaknesses in the putty repair exist.

Once any pinholes have been identified, the valve is unscrewed to relieve pressure beneath the putty. The new leaks are then sealed by reinforcing those weaker areas with further Superfast Aqua PW.

This repair method was originally devised for sealing large water pipes in Malaysia where it was not possible to effectively apply Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape or fit repair clamps.

The above video was filmed as part of a demonstration on a test rig at Sylmasta HQ in the United Kingdom. A large hole was drilled close to a flange joint on a 150mm steel pipe.

Pressure was set to 5 bar whilst the repair took place. Once the repair had been completed, the cured putty was attacked with a hammer to show its strength and resilience.

Superfast Aqua PW has WRAS approval, meaning it is certified to British standards as safe to use on pipes and fittings carrying drinking water. It bonds to pipework made of steel, iron, copper, PVC plastic, GRP, ceramic and concrete.
