AB Original Epoxy Putty used alongside Fibreglass Tape to reinforce a section of weakened pipe

Watch: How to quickly strengthen a small area of weakened pipe using epoxy putty and fibreglass tape

The above video was filmed at Sylmasta HQ after we were asked by a client for a quick and easy method to strengthen a small section of pipe weakened by external factors like corrosion and chemical attack.

We mixed Sylmasta AB Original Epoxy Putty by hand until it was streak free and uniform in colour. The putty was then formed into a 5mm thick disc large enough to cover the weak spot and pushed down firmly onto the pipe.

Whilst the putty remained tacky and uncured, high density Fibreglass Tape was cut from a roll and into a shape similar to the putty disc. The Fibreglass Tape was pressed firmly into the AB Original and trimmed around the disc to leave behind no overhang.

Another 5mm thick AB Original disc was moulded and applied over the Fibreglass Tape and first layer of epoxy putty. AB Original was then left to set. It hardened in two hours and achieved maximum properties in 24 hours.

Once fully cured, AB Original was permanently bonded to the pipe with the Fibreglass Tape cocooned inside for added strength. The outer wall thickness of the pipe was increased by 10mm in total, rebuilding the weakened pipeline back towards original specification.

The cured AB Original also provided a chemically resistant shield, acting as a sacrificial layer to protect the original metalwork from future attack.

This repair method using AB Original and Fibreglass Tape offers a faster alternative for small repair areas compared with mixing and applying an epoxy paste like Industrial Metal.

Where many metres of a major pipeline needed reinforcing, Industrial Metal would still be used. Kneading large quantities of epoxy putty by hand is harder work and more time-consuming than mixing and applying an epoxy paste using a spreader over significant sections of pipework.
