Domestic Soil Vent Pipe Crack Sealed and Repair Disguised by UK Homeowner

A deep crack in a domestic soil vent pipe is sealed by a homeowner using Sylmasta AB Original Epoxy Putty, with the repair then completely and seamlessly disguised by creating an imitation sleeve joint over the damage area.

Case Study Overview

Site Domestic property
Location United Kingdom
Pipe Type Soil vent pipe
Repair Type Leak Repair
Products Sylmasta AB Original Epoxy Putty

Defect

The soil vent pipe was fixed to the wall next to a door into the house. It was leaking through a previous failed repair attempt made several years earlier. The crack and surrounding area were so unsightly that they naturally drew the eye of anyone coming into the property.

Not only did the homeowner want to seal the leak, but they also hoped to disguise the fact there was any damage at all by improving the appearance of the soil vent pipe.

SylWrap Solution

As much of the original repair material was ground out as possible before a wider groove was created either side of the crack.

This made a larger repair area which was much easier to fill with Sylmasta AB Original Epoxy Putty. It also provided a better key for the epoxy putty to bond with, improving adhesion with the pipe.

AB Original was kneaded by hand. Whilst soft, the putty was packed as tightly as possible into the crack and groove to seal it.

Once the crack had been totally filled, more AB Original was mixed and formed into a neat band. The band was placed around the diameter of the pipe, covering the repair area to resemble a sleeve joint.

The slow-setting formulation of AB Original meant the process did not need to be rushed as the homeowner had two hours to carefully and accurately create the imitation joint. Once applied to the pipe, the putty was smoothed with a little water and left to cure.

Outcome

When AB Original reached maximum properties after 24 hours, it left the crack filled with a rock hard material and a ring of epoxy putty permanently bonded to the pipe which perfectly mimicked the appearance of a sleeve.

Follow Up

Anyone now entering the house via the door next to the soil vent pipe is completely unaware it had been leaking and looked so unattractive before undergoing repair.

They just assume the pipe is being held together by a fitting – rather than there being an imitation joint made using an epoxy putty stick bonded over a sealed crack.
