Pipe Defect

The pond was located on a property cut into the side of a hill. Behind was a retaining wall which was suffering from structural damage caused by tree roots, shrubs and overgrown ivy.

To protect the wall, the property owner decided to cut away the problem plants using a pruning saw. Unbeknown to the property owner, buried just below the surface was a hose made from industrial strength plastic supplying water to the pond.

The pruning saw caused damage to the hose across a 300mm area. Pressurised water began spraying out from a 80mm longitudinal split in the hose with several smaller leaks either side of the main incision.

A combination of the roots, the wall, the ground and the hose being partially buried meant that gaining access was difficult. The property owner therefore needed a flexible repair method to fix the plastic hose.

SylWrap Solution

Water supply to the pond was turned off and the hose cleaned to remove all traces of soil. A plastic sheet was then placed underneath the hose to prevent soil or grit being picked up during the repair.

The property owner was supplied with a SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit for the application. An additional roll of Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape was included to ensure that the entire 300mm area of damage on the plastic hose could be covered.

Both Wrap & Seals were applied to seal all leaks on the plastic hose. The self-amalgamating silicone repair tape fuses to form a solid rubber band, creating a high-pressure seal over leaks when stretched by 300 percent, still possible despite the space constraints around the pipe.

After the application of Wrap & Seal, the repair was overwrapped with a SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage. SylWrap HD is a composite wrap with a water-activated resin which sets rock hard in minutes, providing an impact resistant layer of protection against future breaches.

Outcome

Completing the hosepipe repair took under 30 minutes and cost the property owner less than £40, representing a significant cost saving on hiring a specialist contractor or replacing the damaged section of hose.

Follow Up
