When a 300mm plastic pipe in a quarry aggregate wash plant was pieced during day-to-day operations at the site, a leak repair was needed to prevent a disruptive shutdown of systems caused by the fitting of replacement parts.

Pipe Defect

The 300m plastic pipe fed water into the aggregate wash plant in the quarry and become pierced during day-to-day operations at the site.

As a result, a highly pressurised jet of water was spraying from a pinhole leak in the pipe. This hole needed to be sealed as replacing the damaged section of pipe would have required a disruptive shutdown of equipment.

SylWrap Solution

Because water flow to the plastic pipe could be turned off, it was decided to use a SylWrap Standard Pipe Repair Kit.

Superfast Copper Epoxy Putty sealed the pinhole leak. Superfast Copper comes in a pre-formatted 114g stick.

The quarry simply had to break off the required amount of putty, knead it by hand and then push it into the pinhole whilst soft. Superfast Copper then hardened to seal the leak.

To reinforce the putty, a SYL633HD SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage was applied over the putty. SylWrap HD is a composite wrap with a water-activated resin which sets rock hard in minutes.

SylWrap HD provided a layer of protection to the Superfast Copper, creating a repair that was permanent and pressure resistant up to 30 bar.

Outcome

Within one hour, the pinhole leak had been repaired and the plastic pipe was back in operation.

The quarry saved themselves both time and money by carrying out their own repair at a fraction of the cost of hiring a contractor or replacing the pierced section of pipe.

Follow Up
