The above video was filmed at Bahrain International Airport as the maintenance team made a live leak repair to a seeping step joint on a 100mm UPVC pipe.

Repairing a leaking step joint with pressure on is difficult. The airport had no choice, however, as the pipe was part of a critical system which could not be shutdown for repair or replacement.

The step joint connected two sections of pipe together. It was seeping due to solvent cement bonds which joined the line weakening, creating a leak path through which water could escape.

Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape was used to seal around the step joint. The Tape stretches by 300 percent and amalgamates together as it is wrapped around a pipe, fusing to form a solid rubber band capable of containing high pressure leaks.

To build an effective repair around the step, Wrap & Seal application started 100mm away from the joint. The Tape was wrapped towards the step with a 50 percent overlap.

Once the joint was reached, Wrap & Seal was applied directly on top of itself. As more layers were added, a ridge was formed which eventually reached level height with the step.

Application then continued a further 50mm across the step, before return directly over the leak. Another ridge was built here, with wrapping only stopping once the maintenance team were satisfied no more water was leaking from the pipe.

This indicated a repair had been built with the required pressure resistant. Two 50mm x 4m Wrap & Seals were used, after which a SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage was applied to reinforce the initial repair.

SylWrap is a composite wrap with a water-activated resin. It was wrapped and smoothed around the entire repair area, curing to form a rock-hard, impact resistant protective shell.

The entire repair was completed in less than 30 minutes whilst the pipe remained live, ensuring there was no disruption to the airport. The products were supplied as part of a SYL-PRO-633 SylWrap Pipe Repair Contractor Case.

Each Case has enough products to make up to six live leak repairs on pipes of different types and materials. The Case is easy-to-store on site and transport. It ensures maintenance teams have everything to hand for making a pipe repair as soon as problems are identified.

Although this repair was not to a system carrying drinking water, everything in the Contractor Case has WRAS Approval.
