Pipe Defect

Staff arrived at the golf club on Sunday morning to discover water all over the kitchen floor, surrounding the dishwasher which is always left to run overnight.

After emptying the appliance and pulling it out from its position against the wall, they discovered a 50mm plastic drain pipe at the back of the dishwasher had a split around its diameter.

Sunday is the busiest day of the week for the golf club, with members playing, guests drinking and the restaurant serving brunch and lunch.

Washing everything by hand whilst waiting for the pipe to be repaired or replaced would be a full-time job for one member of staff.

The club were therefore faced with either taking someone away from serving or bar duties and accepting the disruption that would cause, or calling in another staff member on their day off to try and help manage the load.

SylWrap Solution

Before designating an unfortunate member of staff the role of washing dishes, the club contacted the contractor who serviced their drains to see if he might have a solution.

Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape was wrapped around the entire diameter of the split. The tape was stretched by three times its length, amalgamating together to form a solid rubber band over the leak.

Enough force was exerted by one Wrap & Seal to withstand up to 25 bar pressure; more than enough for the maximum 2 bar the dishwasher drain pipe operated at.

The repair was then reinforced with SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage. After being activated with water, SylWrap HD was wrapped and smoothed around the pipe. It cured in minutes to form a rock-hard, impact resistant layer of protection.

Outcome

Thanks to the ease and speed of the drain pipe repair, the dishwasher was back operational well before the Sunday lunchtime rush.

There was even enough time for staff to use the dishwasher to clear the backlog of dirty dishes from breakfast and brunch without the need for any cleaning to be done by hand.

Follow Up

Repairs made with a SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit are permanent. The golf club have therefore decided not to replace the drain pipe until the time comes for a new dishwasher.
