Plastic PVC pipework which formed part of a swimming pool filtration system in a leisure centre in the United Kingdom had developed a large, inaccessible crack which needed repair.
A section of 8” PVC plastic pipe had been sitting on a flat steel support bracket. Over time, this had caused the PVC to sag and flatten, eventually leading to a 2” long crack to develop in the pipework.
Water passing through the swimming pool filtration system was now leaking out of the pipe. The contractor in charge of maintenance of the leisure centre would normally plastic weld such a crack.
On this occasion, that repair method was impossible. The pipe in question was only 3” off the ground and the crack was facing downwards. It was also in a compact area surrounded by other components from the filtration system, making accessibility difficult.
Removing the damaged pipe to carry out a repair or replacement would have required the disassembly of half of the filtration system, a time consuming and complicated process which the leisure centre were desperate to avoid.
The biggest challenge of the swimming pool filtration system repair came with the location of the damaged section of pipework. To cover as many bases as possible, it was decided that a SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit would be the best solution.
Each Universal Kit contains both Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape and Superfast Epoxy Putty for sealing the initial leak.
If the lack of space around the PVC plastic pipe meant that Wrap & Seal could not be stretched enough to be effective, then the maintenance company had a back up option with the Superfast Steel Stick – although the system would have to be turned off to use the Putty as it is not suitable for live leaks.
It then transpired that water pressure would have to be maintained for the repair. Because the crack in the pipe was facing downwards and the contractor carrying out the repair working from above, there was no way of seeing exactly where the 2″ crack was located without water leaking out as an indicator.
Although difficult to apply because of the space issues, the Wrap & Seal was successfully taped to the pipe, sealing the leak. Wrap & Seal resists pressure up to 30bar on live leaks, making it easily suitable for handling the repair of a filtration system with 1.5bar.
Once the Wrap & Seal had been applied, it was overwrapped with SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage. SylWrap sets rock hard in 30 minutes, providing an impact-resistant layer over the top of Wrap & Seal.
The swimming pool filtration system was returned to full service within one hour. The maintenance company had originally planned for the repair to be temporary until they could find a suitable time to disassemble the system to carry out a longer lasting solution.
Because repairs carried out with the SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kit are permanent, they now have no need to take that course of action, saving the leisure centre money and preventing a potentially time-consuming shutdown.
After completing the repair, the head of the maintenance company contacted Sylmasta to say: “I am very impressed by SylWrap products as repair solutions to leaks on this sort of installation.”
“I have recommended Sylmasta to a service company for pool water installations. They sometimes get calls to repair leaks at times when spares are challenging to obtain, such as evenings and weekends, so I suggested they consider stocking your SylWrap products as a solution for fixing a leaking pipe quickly as soon as it is reported.”
The companies in question have since been advised to take stock of SylWrap Pipe Repair Contractor Cases. The Contractor Case contains enough products to carry out up to six pipe repairs at a cheaper cost-per-repair than buying Pipe Repair Kits individually, making it the perfect product for companies which may have to repair leaking pipes on a semi-regular basis.
