Ceramic Brushable Epoxy Coating protects pipes, pumps and tanks against abrasion and wear damage

Ceramic Brushable Epoxy Coating

Ceramic Brushable is a ceramic-filled protective epoxy coating brush applied to pipework, pumps and tanks to protect against wear and abrasion

It is smoother and harder-setting than Liquid Metal Epoxy Coating. It creates a silicon carbide-reinforced layer shielding the original pipe or tank substrate from impact, cavitation and erosion.

Where damage has already occurred, Ceramic Brushable refurbishes weakened and brittle structures by providing them with a new, ultra-smooth outer surface.

This outer layer also acts as an impermeable membrane of containment. If future internal attack breaches the original pipe or tank wall, the shield prevents content leaking out.

In addition, coating a pipe with Ceramic Brushable improves adhesion between the pipe and the composite repair wrap added at Stage 4 of the SylWrap Pipe Refurbishment System, strengthening repairs by increasing the effectiveness of the wrap.

Ceramic Brushable is effective on steel, other metals and most plastics. Its light consistency makes it easy to mix and apply with little sag. The ease of application makes it ideal for coating directly onto elbow joints, flanges, valves, water boxes, impellers and pumps.

About

How to protect pipes, pumps and tanks using Ceramic Brushable Epoxy Coating

Ceramic Brushable is a two-part epoxy coating which the user mixes with a stirrer before coating onto pipework and other equipment requiring protection using a brush.

It is available in green, blue and black as standard. Other colours can also be produced for specific repairs. Please contact Sylmasta for more information.

The pipe, pump or tank requiring protection should be clean and free of paint, rust and grime. Roughening up the surface either through grit blasting or grinding with a coarse wheel or abrasive disk pad improves adhesion.

Ceramic Brushable is applied immediately after preparation. The user mixes Part A and Part B at a 3:1 ratio by volume or 5:1 ratio by weight.

For convenience, there is enough room in the Part A container to empty Part B directly into it. This allows the user to mix and apply Ceramic Brushable straight from the pack.

The contrasting colours of Part A and Part B blend into one to indicate successful mixing. The user then brushes the epoxy coating onto the area requiring protection. Each coating should be 0.5-1.00mm thick. Applying at least two coats ensures a pinhole-free coating.

Ceramic Brushable has a work time of 45 minutes. The re-coat time is approximately four to six hours. It achieves a full cure with maximum properties 24 hours after the final coat. It is virtually odourless, with no unpleasant smell.

The maximum temperature resistance of Ceramic Brushable is 150°C when post-cured. Full instructions for post-curing, surface preparation and how to apply Ceramic Brushable come with the product and are available on the TDS.

Reinforcement with SylWrap Composite Bandage

Sylmasta recommend reinforcing repairs made with Ceramic Brushable by overwrapping the final layer of epoxy coating after it has gelled but still remains tacky with a composite wrap like SylWrap HD Pipe Repair Bandage.

SylWrap HD is a water-activated composite wrap. It sets rock-hard in minutes to form an impact resistant layer of protection covering Ceramic Brushable, strengthening the repair by further increasing the outer thickness of the pipe.

Ceramic Brushable Epoxy Coating Applications

  • Protecting metal and plastic pipes, valves and tanks from external wear, abrasion, impact, cavitation and erosion
  • Forming an impermeable membrane around pipework which contains content in the event of internal attack breaching the original pipe wall
  • Increasing adhesion between composite wraps and pipework for stronger, more effective repairs

Benefits of Ceramic Brushable Epoxy Coating

  • Ceramic-filled for an ultra-smooth, extremely hard finish reinforced with silicon carbide
  • Easy to mix and apply – simply brush onto surfaces requiring protection
  • 45 minute work time means the user can carefully apply without fear the coating will cure off before application is complete
  • Sylmasta can custom-make colours to match specific repairs

Repair Calculator

Ceramic Brushable Epoxy Coating Repair Calculator

The quantity of Ceramic Brushable needed to protect a specific pipe based on outside diameter can be determined using the Coverage Calculator (Liquid Metal, Ceramic Brushable, WearShield).

Select Ceramic Brushable as the repair product and whether you are coating a pipe or a cylinder. Enter the diameter of the pipe or cylinder and the length of the area requiring protection. Next select the desired thickness of the protective layer provided by Ceramic Brushable.

Once data is entered, the calculator will suggest the recommended amount of Ceramic Brushable in kilograms. Calculations serve only as an initial guide and judgement should be made on the exact repair based upon all conditions.
